I understand conservatism and what it means to be a conservative. There have been a number of great compassionate conservatives even a couple in the White House. But, what I don’t understand is the people and especially the politicians who are calling themselves conservatives today and how they equate what they call conservatism with the republican conservatism of say a Barry Goldwater, or a Robert Taft or even a Richard Nixon or a Gerald Ford?
And we actually had liberal and moderate republicans once. Abraham Lincoln was a liberal republican. Theodore Roosevelt was a liberal republican. Everett Dirksen from Illinois lead the senate republicans in the 60’s. He stood up on the senate floor and admonished his colleagues to vote for the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Arguably neither might have passed if he had not done so.
So where did the republican left wing disappear to? When did the republican conservatism movement become so anti-worker, anti-union, anti-women, anti-gay/lesbian, and anti-minority? Today, we are inundated with rabid foam at the mouth politicians who call themselves conservatives and say they are patriots and offer themselves up as candidates for the republican party, but appear to be more aligned with the John Birch Society than they do with the republican party or what was formerly the republican party.
Today in order to be admitted into the republican party you evidently have to pass a litmus test whereby you swear allegiance to Grover Nordquist’s creed which is to do away with government as we know and have known it for the past 230 plus years.
You have to be against abortion rights for women. Which means you want the government to tell every women what they can and can’t do with their bodies. How is that conservatism? That’s government interference and all of the neo-conservatives profess to want to get government off our backs. Ah, that is unless you are a woman. Unless you are gay. Unless you are in need of affordable health care. Then let the government interfere. That’s okay! That’s not conservatism either!
In order to be admitted into the republican party today you have to agree that not everyone has equal rights. If you are among the upper 1 percent in terms of wealth, you are to be afforded special rights. If you are a corporation you are to be granted ‘personhood’ which will make you a super-human with more rights than the remaining 99 percent.
Today’s neo-conservatives come republicans want to do away with equal opportunity. They want to prevent minorities, women, seniors and students from having the same right they are entitled to – The Right To Vote. That is the most precious right we as citizens of this nation are privileged to have. They want to restrict who has that right. They want to dictate what religion you can worship. They would take away our rights under the first amendment as relates to the freedom of speech, the freedom to choose what religion to worship and where we could worship it at.
Today’s republicans come neo-conservatives want to get government off of our backs. Yeah right! If they can pass a law that restricts the rights of certain segments of our society, well let government ride our backs on that, it’s okay cause they are protecting the democracy of the uber-rich and the corporate world. Ordinary citizens and their rights be damned.
H.L. Hunt would be proud. Robert Welch would be proud. They lived their entire lives striving for a society where everything we saw, everything we read and even our thoughts would be controlled. They were the true ancestors of today’s neo-conservatives. 1984 is here if Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum have any say in making it happen.
What passes for conservatism today is really about control. It is about bigotry, racism and the restriction of rights. It’s about smaller government only as it relates to the ‘common good’ and restricting the promotion of ‘the general welfare’ for all. Today’s neo-conservatives don’t want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare nor secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity. Only if it works to the advantage of the corporate world and those among us who have more than they need and want more than they have.
The republican party is no longer the party of Lincoln. It is no longer the Grand Old Party of the Republic. It’s become a party that is lead by people, who pander to racists and who often cavort with bigots. They don’t want to get government off our backs they want to take away our right to have a say in how our government is run. And they wouldn’t know a conservative if it came up from its grave and bit them on their rectal cavity!” —– Bob Bearden
