What has Obama done? What happened to HOPE? Where has he been the last couple of years? How is a nation to survive? Where is this guy taking America? Is there anything that this President has contributed to the great institution called America? Are average citizens safe in this country? How are we to get good leadership these days? Is Obama out to make me look bad? What? What? What? Why? Why? Why?
These questions and more will be discussed in an Okieprogressive segment called: Talking the President’s Progressive Achievements.
Segment 8: Religious Freedom
Each year, the President declares January 16th to be Religious Freedom Day, and calls upon Americans to “observe this day through appropriate events and activities in homes, schools, and places of worship.” The day is the anniversary of the passage, in 1786, of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. We encourage schools to recognize Religious Freedom Day during the school week leading up to January 16. – ReligiousFreedomDay.com
President Obama issued proclamations in 2010, 2011, and 2012 concerning our freedom of religion. How much you wanna bet he proclaims Jan, 16 Religious Freedom Day in every year he holds office. I include this in my series on Progressive Achievements since I believe this to be the #1 progressive issue not just for this president but for all. If you recall, the US introduced religious freedom into the Constitution at its founding. This was something new on the planet and especially in Western Culture.
“National Religious Freedom Day commemorates the Virginia General Assembly’s adoption of Thomas Jefferson’s landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. This vital document became the basis for the establishment clause, and led to freedom of religion for all Americans as protected in the religion clause in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.
Religious Freedom Day is officially proclaimed on January 16 each year by an annual statement by the President of the United States. This day is commemorated by the First Freedom Centerin Richmond, Virginia by an annual First Freedom Award banquet.” – Wiki
Attacking President Obama on matters of religion is counter to one of the best things about our nation–religious freedom for all. I don’t think I have to go into details within this post concerning the extent the far right is willing to go to smear the president as being non-religious.
Presidential Proclamation — Religious Freedom Day, 2012
“For nearly four centuries, men and women have immigrated to America’s shores in pursuit of religious freedom. Hailing from diverse backgrounds and faiths, countless settlers have shared a simple aspiration — to practice their beliefs free from prejudice and persecution. In 1786, the Virginia General Assembly took a bold step toward preserving this fundamental liberty by passing the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which brought to life the ideal of religious tolerance from the texts of the Enlightenment in the laws of state. On Religious Freedom Day, we celebrate this historic milestone, reflect upon the Statute’s declaration that “Almighty God hath created the mind free,” and reaffirm that the American people will remain forever unshackled in matters of faith…
…Our Nation is committed to religious liberty not only for all Americans, but also for individuals around the world. Internationally, we bear witness to those who live in fear of violence and discrimination because of their beliefs. My Administration continues to stand with all who are denied the ability to choose, express, or live their faith freely, and we remain dedicated to protecting this universal human right and the vital role it plays in ensuring peace and stability for all nations…
…NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2012, as Religious Freedom Day. I call on all Americans to commemorate this day with events and activities that teach us about this critical foundation of our Nation’s liberty, and show us how we can protect it for future generations at home and around the world….” – BARACK OBAMA
I don’t know about anybody else but I’m mad as hell. In the last couple of years here in Oklahoma, I haven’t done for my country anything matching this annually upholding the tradition of proclaiming January 16 as Religious Freedom Day.
Damn that Obama! Curses! In comparison, I ain’t done squat.
Well, that concludes this installment of …
