Debate Over Gun Control

by Bob Murl Bearden

gun-control-law-usThe republicans have had their way again. The debate over gun control versus the second amendment continues. The party of Lincoln now appears to be a solely owned subsidiary of the National Rifle Association an entity which is itself a solely owned subsidiary of arms dealers and sellers of weapons of mass destruction. They ganged up on the American people using cranky old white guys like Mitch McConnell and again held America hostage. The American love affair with weapons of mass destruction our addiction to the culture of violence will continue.

The parents of Sandy Hook Elementary aren’t giving up and neither should we. The NRA and its lap dogs have defied 90 percent of the American public which are now in favor of universal background checks and some sane form of gun control.
Although the NRA and its wild-eyed leader Wayne LA Pierre may have won the day by scaring a cranky bunch of rich old white guys in the Senate, the battle isn’t over.

Second amendment crazies are vocal and loud and they have scared enough Senators who worry more about getting re-elected than they do about protecting our children into once again voting their pocket books instead of their consciences. But as Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over until it’s over!” And it ain’t over. Safe and sane gun control is something whose time has come. The Sandy Hook Promise will become a reality. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, in fact it is the only thing that ever has!” And the parents and citizens of Newtown and Sandy Hook are a group of thoughtful committed citizens who aren’t giving up or backing down.

The good people of Sandy Hook aren’t quitting. Their cause is righteous and they know it. They have the commitment and backing of the most powerful office in our land – the office of the President of the United States of America. We are a nation of laws and just because a few cranky old white guys have refused to listen to the American public doesn’t mean they have won. It’s about what is right and universal background checks is what is right. The Sandy Hook parents are committed to breaking our circle of violence and making a difference in the lives of others and they will.

Shame on those members of the US Senate who refused to stand on their hind legs and act like the responsible legislators that their constituents elected them to be and instead again became the chattels of the paragons of greed and avarice and turned tail and ran into the arms of Wayne LA Pierre and the National Rifle Association. They should be ashamed to call themselves legislators.

Being responsible means doing that which is right. They cannot be called responsible when they go against their own constituencies in favor of an organization who started out as a high-minded group of responsible gun owners and morphed into an organization who places profit over gun safety and who has bastardized the second amendment to please their masters the arms dealers. The NRA is anti-American and responsible sportsmen and women should call them out and disassociate themselves with the NRA. Gun ownership isn’t about killing people, it’s about safety and good citizenship.

The government isn’t coming to get anyone’s guns and it never has. The NRA is peopled by a bunch of out and out prevaricators and that’s not the American way nor is it patriotic. The second amendment has never been about gun control and anyone who says it is doesn’t know a thing about the history of the Bill of Rights nor the Constitution of the United States!” —– Bob Bearden
