The bills in the state legislature to squash gay marriages and to allow cafes and other businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians is of course mainly just wing nuts trying to stop something that a vast majority of the American public and Oklahomans in general are over and done with. But the majority is not vocal and the wing nuts are, and in Oklahoma the wing nuts are in charge of the asylum so instead of working on things that really matter they waste time and government money on things they know will fail.
And they say they are doing it not because it makes sense and has any real chance of going anywhere, but because they just want to save freedom from itself. I didn’t know freedom was lost or that it needed saving. Allowing anyone who chooses to do so to marry whomever they choose is freedom. Big time freedom. It’s the freedom to choose. Duh!
Allowing anyone within the rule of law to choose where they eat or where they purchase whatever they need to purchase is freedom of choice. That’s what America is all about, the freedom to choose. Other countries don’t always offer their citizens freedom of choice and even here in America there are some freedoms of choice that are denied some of our citizens. Such as a woman’s right to choose what she wants to do with her own body. And despite what those on the right allege that is not about religion it’s about the freedom to choose.
We have a lot of freedoms in this nation, but we also have a lot of people who want to pick and choose what freedoms some of us can have and cannot have. Native Americans once weren’t allowed to be served liquor or even to purchase it. But of course only if they were considered to be full blood. I was once denied a haircut, because the barber told me he didn’t cut brown boys hair. That was in the days of Jim Crow and I lived in Texas and though I wasn’t black nor Hispanic I was brown in skin color so I was considered (at least by that barber) to be less deserving.
Freedoms are and should always be accessible to every citizen not just to a few who believe their religion trumps all others or that their skin color should be more dominant than anyone else’s. Cause despite the Kris Kristopherson song, freedom ain’t just another word for nothing left to lose. Freedom is a right. It is also a right of equal access to marriage, medical services, to a place to eat or a place to shop. The right of equal access to any public school or any lifestyle that a person might choose that wouldn’t be of criminal intent.
We may not always agree with someone’s lifestyle, but in a free society everyone should have equal access to services and to live the kind of life they choose. No one should have the right to abridge the right of another person to their equal access to all the freedoms our constitution offers! And that includes a person’s right to choose to marry whomever they fall in love with.
